Walking on Air

"Walking on Air" is a hybrid show - a homecoming for our VIVA Fest student competitors and a showcase of our talented students and staff.  It's a celebration of the community of students and staff who stuck with us all throughout the pandemic and aims to shine a spotlight on their hard work.

Performer Snippets

Lily
1. My favorite part of being an aerialist is all the opportunities that it presents. I am able to be creative, increase my mental and physical strength, persevere, and try challenging things that push my limits.

2. To me, this piece represents freedom and being yourself/feeling good about who you are.

3. My favorite part about being in the Samadhi family is the supportive and friendly community.

Emma

1. My favorite part of being an aerialist is the friendships I get to make.

2. To me, this piece allows me to show how much fun I have doing different choreography and skills in the air.

3. My favorite part about being in the Samadhi family is the friendships and memories we get to make together.

4. I like to read and play water polo and plan on doing aerial dance as long as I can.

Ayu

1.My favorite part of being an aerialist is that I can express myself and be creative.

2. For me this piece means to welcome people. It is purely about joy.

3. For me, I feel that Samadhi really creates a family here. It is like my second home.

4. I am 14 and I go to Kaiser high school. I have been doing aerial at Samadhi since I was four years old.

Emily

1. My favorite part about being an aerialist is that I find aerials to be incredibly challenging but endearingly rewarding. Aerials can be frustrating and demanding both physically and mentally, but they also cultivate perseverance and discipline and an exciting sense of self-accomplishment. There is no better feeling than finally figuring out a move with which you have been having difficulty.

2. Although I didn’t begin my aerial journey that long ago, this piece has highlighted for me how much progress I have made since my first class. Additionally, the ending sequence is a nice little reminder to have fun.

3. When I first signed up for classes at Samadhi, I was really nervous. I now know that I had no reason to be. Everyone here is incredibly warm and welcoming. I’ve been taught by some truly fantastic instructors, made some really good friends, and learned a lot more than I could have predicted.

Carol

1. I was first introduced to aerial arts when my now husband took me to a flying trapeze class on our 2nd or 3rd date. I love how challenging aerial silk is, yet with enough practice, the moves look effortless.

2. This performance is important to me because it’s the first time I’ve performed with my daughters.

3. I love training at Samadhi. We work hard, but it’s a fun and supportive environment.

Maddie & Briella

They are excited to perform but mostly excited to wear cute costumes!

Lauren & Evangeline

1. In the circus community, Evangeline has found a place where she feels that she belongs. While she battles with multiple learning disabilities, circus has helped her learn ways to overcome them. Lauren began practicing as a way to bond with Evangeline and has loved the strength she's gained from it.

2. Evangeline joined our family through adoption. This piece represents the search for each other and the struggles we went through to create our family.

3. Our favorite part about Samadhi is that it’s a support network.

4. Evangeline is lucky enough to have strong support from her biological family, as well. They have been very involved in her circus journey and are always quick to lend support.

Rowan

1. My favorite part about being an aerialist is how happy and graceful I feel when I’m in the air. It makes me feel like all my worries disappear when I perform!

2. This piece is inspired from the tv series “shadow and bone”. I am portraying Alina Starkov, who can harness the power of the sun. This piece is about me learning to control my powers. I enjoy getting to become a character and tell a story through my performance. It makes me feel like I’m powerful!

3. The people at Samadhi are my favorite part. I’ve made great friends through Samadhi.

4. I’d like to thank my mom for sewing my costume and my coaches for giving me this wonderful experience.

Skye

1. My favorite part of being an aerialist is being able to do a ton of awesome tricks and flips on silks, hoop and more.

2. In this piece, I feel like I am air and silk “bending” and am very powerful just like my character is super strong and smart and able to water “bend” in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

3. My favorite part about being in the Samadhi family is that I’m always surrounded by kind, supportive and inspiring people whenever I’m there.

Lori

1. My favorite part about being an aerialist is finding joy in the small moments, like finding a fast spin, learning a new skill, or getting better at something that used to be very difficult. Aerials also helps me pull my mind away from the trauma I see at work and it plays a significant role in my work life balance and mental health.

2. This piece is about trying something new, from the music to the variety of style, to my new favorite skills. The geeky part of me is very excited about it.

3. I love the community and support I have received at Samadhi, it truly feels like family.

Cheryl

Aerials allow us to take flight and soar into another place and time, away from realities and into endless possibilities… I am so honored to be able to perform with my beautiful, inspiring ballet ohana, as well as performing on the silks with the most incredible Ann Monaco! But most of all I am so grateful to once again have a chance to take this journey with the amazing, magical choreography of Marie Takazawa!!! I hope I do you all proud!!!

Ann

1. My favorite part of being an aerialist is challenging my mind and my body and being able to express myself creatively.

2. This piece represents reclaiming personal power, overcoming hard times, and constant transformation.

3. My favorite part about being in the Samadhi ohana is the laughter and love 😊

Ballet

This piece is called Lady Birds and has been choreographed by Ms. Marie Takazawa. It is dedicated to the incredible women performing in the piece, as they are all professionals and mothers. The piece is comprised of two aerialists, Cheryl and Ann, and her ballet class, which was created during the pandemic! Marie had a hip replacement operation in May, yet these ladies took on the challenge to work on the choreography she left them with. We at Samadhi Hawaii think that the Ballet class was one of the best things to come from the pandemic at our studio!

Ka’ili

1. To me, the best part about being an aerialist is that it allows me to communicate in a way I have difficulty expressing. Telling a story or expressing emotions with a performance is easier for me than using my words.

2. My piece is familiar with the feeling of getting neglected; predominantly in a romantic sense. The feeling of lacking meaning to someone and understanding that their passion is no longer yours to keep.

3. I enjoy the environment at Samadhi. It's energetic, artistic, and empathetic. To me, it's the home and family I will always come back to.

4. If you resonated with this piece, I hope I could express the feeling nicely.

Tamara

1. My favorite part about being an aerialst is that I get to explore the space between the "air" and the "ground" on different apparatus, and sometimes literally defy gravity!

2. To me, my piece means acceptance, freedom, boldness, and "feeling good" about where I am in my aerial journey.

3. My favorite part about being a member of the Samadhi ohana is how supportive everyone is and how it's a safe place to explore things outside of your comfort zone. When I walk up those stairs and into the studio, it feels like coming home.

Colleen

1. My favorite part of being an aerialist is accomplishing things that seemed impossible at first. It is so empowering!

2. This piece is meant to embody the fierce, electric energy of lightning. Ominous and powerful, dangerous and beautiful.

3. I feel so deeply connected to my Samadhi ohana. This community has brought so much joy to my life! As a student, performer, and instructor, one of my favorite things has been watching our Littles grow up into young adults. I also love working together to create choreography and shows. It's just such a special group. I feel so blessed to be a part of the Samadhi ohana for 10 years now!

Liza

1. My favorite part of being an aerialist is the blend of the challenge, the creative outlet, and the fun.
2. This piece is all about stepping outside of myself and embracing a character. (Thank you, Angelica, for helping me harness a little "Bond girl" energy)

3. My favorite part of being a member of the talented and loving Samadhi family is all of the support, encouragement and guidance.  Everyone in the studio is quick with applause and a generous spirit. Need a costume? Someone has mesh, glitter and sequins coming your way. Got stuck? Someone is there to help untangle you!  Need musical or character inspiration?  There's a Samadhi member ready to provide an opinion.

4. As a mom of a performer, I appreciate the life lessons about teamwork, hard work, and communication fostered in the studio by all of our instructors.  The Samadhi family has seen Sam grow up and provided so much support. I am immensely grateful.

Sam

1. My favorite part of being an aerialist is having a creative outlet that I can always come to when I want to express myself.
2. This piece is an expression of my love for Hawaiian music and the place that it has in my family and childhood. I was inspired to create something with this song while remembering the connection my grandma had to Hawaiian music.
3. My favorite thing about being part of Samadhi is the community I've felt at home with for the past 10 years, and meeting the friends and mentors I'll have for a lifetime!

Codi

1. My favorite part about being an aerialist is that I love learning something challenging and making it look beautiful.
2. This song is so romantic and soulful- perfect for a duet! I enjoyed finding poses to express the lyrics.

3. My favorite part about being a member of the Samadhi family is that I enjoy learning from other teachers AND students! Everyone has something different to share.

4.  It's great working with a partner- expect more from the dynamic duo in the future! Also: see Morgan’s solo trapeze next week at Lunar Vibes 😀

Morgan

1. My favorite part about being an aerialist is dancing while spinning, flying, orbiting, swinging, and ascending and descending.

2. We created this piece earlier this year and the ability to finesse it for so long and perform it with ease feels very satisfying.

3. My favorite part about being a member of the Samadhi family is becoming friends with Codi! We met so soon after I arrived here and she has taught me so much about circus and Hawai’i. Feels like it was meant to be.

4. We can be booked for parties and weddings and just had our first gig at a wedding Heeia State Park last week!

Tiana

1. To be an aerialist is to be beautiful and strong! It’s challenging and rewarding! And I always said if I had a super power it would be able to fly!

2. This piece has a very special place in my heart. What started off as a mini show piece transformed into a competition piece that I put all my energy into, and it paid off, opening a whole new career avenue for me!

3. My favorite part about being part of Samadhi is that they’re my ohana! I’ve never felt so immediately welcomed and cared for! And everyone is so uplifting and supportive. Even more so I wasn’t forgotten when I left Hawaii!

4. I owe a huge thank you to Miss Andrea, who without, I would not be the circus artist I am today, and I would not be at the show with her support!

Angelica

1. My favorite part about being an acrobat/aerialist is the ability to create art with my body. Circus is the perfect fusion of athleticism and artistry, and I’m able to tell stories with my physical movement.

2. To me, MCing is about giving back to my aerial ohana since I’m unable to perform due to injuries. I also love connecting with the audience in any way possible, so this is a great way to do that, even if I can’t perform on an apparatus right now.

3. My favorite part of being part of the Samadhi family is being part of an ohana even though home is very far away from Hawaii. Every single person at Hawaii is a beautiful soul that makes me feel welcome and valued. It is the only place where it’s actually rainbows and smiles every day!
